A wonderful perennial that is beautiful in your beds year-round is JACOB'S LADDER, also known as Greek Valerian or Polemonium. I love it not only because it is a low maintenance plant, but has many other attributes loved by the novice or expert gardener alike--it tolerates heavy clay soils, and the most severest of winters (-40 degrees!). It's lovely long-lasting May blooms of white or blue/purple will bloom again if cut off to the main bush after flowering. It's beautiful fern-like solid bright green or variegated foliage stays nice all through the season. It's wonderful in flower bouquets, rock gardens, and is easy to sew seed in the fall or divide plants in early spring (that would be right now!). It tolerates dry soil and light shade, but loves humus-rich soil. This hardy plant does well in the middle-to-front of your beds.
