HALLOWEEN TREATS--A LONG-TIME FAMILY FAVORITE & A NEW ONE TO TRY

Halloween at our house has long been a favorite time in the kitchen, with fun family traditions.  We usually get together and have dinner, carve pumpkins, and make treats to give away as gifts to favorite neighbors and friends.  Last year we made homemade donuts--they were delicious!  Many times we make our famous Licorice Caramels, caramel corn, or fun craft items.  I always have a big pot of my homemade chili, bread sticks, fruit, cheese & crackers and a homemade pumpkin pie.  This year some of us met a 2nd time at my daughters house for homemade vegetable beef soup and carved pumpkins.  I am always on the lookout for new recipes, as well.  This year I found a fun, easy one that I think you'll enjoy.  I'm posting two recipes--our FAVORITE LICORICE CARMEL recipe, which always has lots of requests, as well as the link to a new one--FRESH MARKET POPCORN CRUNCH.  Both are yummy, quick and easy. Halloween is a great time of year, and for me, ushers in the holidays--Thanksgiving and Christmas.  I love this time of year!

FAVORITE LICORICE CARAMELS
1 can Eagle Brand condensed milk
2 cubes butter
1 1/2 Cup light corn syrup
2 Cup sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon licorice with anise oil flavoring
1 teaspoon black paste food coloring

Combine all ingredients in a heavy pan except oil flavoring and paste food coloring.  Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly (this burns easily, so watch carefully).  Cook and stir until mixture reaches a soft ball stage.  (Soft ball is when a small amount turns to a firm, but soft ball, when emerged into a cup of ICE water).  Make sure you don't overcook this.  Remove from heat.  Add the food color and licorice oil.  Pour into a greased 9X13 pan and let set up.  Cut and wrap in waxed paper or saran wrap.  This makes a BIG batch--plenty to give away and have some for yourself as well.  If you like caramels and black licorice, you'll LOVE this recipe!
