Bring on the show! Yesterday I had my first tall bearded iris bloom--BLUEBERRY BLISS, a beautiful Early-to-Mid blooming 40" tall, navy blue, large-flowered (4" X 6 1/2") iris with a dash of ruffling on the falls. It bloomed first because it is against the cement foundation on the southeast side of the yard, giving it lots of heat and morning sun. The blooms are later this year because of all the cloudy, rainy weather, but with this first bloom, there will be lots of iris to follow--about 160 more! This is one of my favorite times of the year--spring blooms of rainbow hues of colored iris, tree and herbaceous peonies, clematis, lupine, columbine and poppies, and the lilacs and snowballs--as well as the bleeding heart that have been out for a while. One of my favorite things to do is get up early and walk around, seeing what "gifts" Mother Nature has brought in the way of emerging sprouts or blooms that morning. Gardening has brought a dimension and satisfaction in life that is indescribable. I'm so grateful for the beauty of the earth, and for the opportunity I have to be a small part of it in my little corner. HAPPY GARDENING, all!
