I harvested all the HYBRID TEA ROSES last night because of a freeze forecast here in the top of Utah. I love the roses at this time of year--their colors burst with exciting color, which has been missing in the hottest months of July and August. And, the blooms are some of the largest all season with the exception of the first blooms June 1. Sometimes they get a little 'nipped' by cold temperatures, but they are beautiful for their last bloom of the year. This arrangement has several different varieties, and their wonderful fragrance fills up a room. I will now top the roses for the winter, cutting them down to 4 feet so the canes won't break down in the cold, snowy winter months. Then, in early spring, just as they start to come out of dormancy and leafing out, I will prune them down to about 18 inches, cutting all the dead canes, keeping about 5 of the strongest, newer canes. This keeps them robust and healthy for years!
